LOAN POLICIES EXPLAINER
For the vast majority of Your Public Library items, patrons can have a maximum of 50 items out and 50 items on hold.
These Material Types all circulate via this 50/50 scheme:
Audiobook CD, Blu-Ray Disc, Book, Book/Media Kit, DVD, Music CD, Periodical, Wonderbook
There are a FEW EXCEPTIONS:
OCPL Tech Pack : 1 out / 1 hold
ILL Material : 5 out / 5 holds
Pass (Park passes & MOST passes) : 1 out / 0 holds
Video Game : 2 out / 2 holds
Downloadable Item (Libby items) : 10 out / 10 holds
Kit : 1 out / 1 hold
Equipment : 1 out / 1 hold
Computer (including peripherals) : 1 out / 0 holds
ITEMS FROM OTHER LIBRARIES WITH NON-YPL-OWNED MATERIAL TYPES:
There are 21 material types that YPL does not own, for these material types, patrons can check out 1 item and place 1 hold for pickup at YPL. If you are seeing patrons requesting these often, let the manager know, we may want to change the loan policy or purchase some of these items for our collection:
Braille, Cassette Tape, CD-Rom, Described Media, Ereader, LP Record, Manuscript, Map, Microfiche, Microfilm, Music Score, Newspaper, Playaway, Playaway View, Read-Along, Sheet Music, Toy/Puzzle, Vertical File, VHS
PACRegistration, Bulk Loan, & Databases Only
The above policies are different if the borrower has an account with the Patron Codes 1) PACRegistration, 2) Bulk Loan, or 3) Databases Only. The policies have been changed to conform to the intent of these Codes: PAC Registration accounts can put some items on hold but cannot borrow any. Databases Only accounts cannot borrow or place holds on any items. Bulk Loan are accounts intended to be used for a group, so the policies reflect that use and are similar to the policies for the “Patron” Patron Code. Bulk Loan accounts cannot check out or place holds on items with material types YPL does not own. This is to prevent items that other libraries do not want distributed via Bulk Loan to be distributed that way. Bulk Loan accounts also cannot check out ILL Materials for the same reason.
In all cases, these limits control when staff will see blocking notes during checkout. Blocks can be overridden by clerks in consultation with the Librarian in Charge. If the Librarian in Charge gives permission, that Librarian in Charge should send an email to the manager indicating what the circumstances were. Many overrides may indicate the loan policy needs to be changed.
FINE CODES
All Library of Things and certain circulating technology checked out at YPL accrue fines at $2 a day with a maximum of $20 ($2 fine). The exception is OCPL Tech Packs which accrue overdue fines at $1 per day with a max of $20 ($1 fine).
The following fine codes exist and can be used with a corresponding policy implementation:
$0 fine, $.025 fine, $1 fine, $2 fine, $3 fine, $5 fine
All of these currently max at $20.
